UGAT warmly congratulates Dr. Gideon Lasco for receiving this year's Virginia A. Miralao Excellence in Research Award given by the Philippine Social Science Council!
UGAT has officially nominated Dr. Lasco's book chapter titled "Living together in precarious times: COVID-19 in the Philippines" from the book Viral Loads: Anthropologies of urgency in the time of COVID-19 published last year by UCL Press. The book chapter is open access.
Part of PSSC's email to UGAT, announcing Dr. Lasco's award, reads:
Five nominees vied for the Award. After the meticulous review of the reviewer-judges, your article emerged as the winner due to its relevance to society as it deals with a current and pressing issue. The judges also lauded the study’s use of an innovative framework for examining human-nonhuman relationships – the connections between humans and nonhumans, and animate and inanimate ‘objects’ in the environment. As one judge commented, “to engage with nonhumans is to be human.”
PSSC will be holding a virtual awarding ceremony to be followed by Dr. Lasco's lecture. Please check out PSSC's website for details.
This is UGAT's first VAM Excellence in Research Award since its launch in 2012. Dr. Lasco is currently a member of the UGAT board.
